Turbine Interactive and the Nebraska 4-H Foundation announced a milestone of $ 9,000 in donations since the March 2011 launch of the foundations first-time online social media fundraising campaign, including a new website. The campaign and website were created and administered by Turbine Interactive.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to turn up the heat for 4-H by giving members and alumni a place to capture their 4-H memories and get them interacting with one another, said Turbine CEO Jason Petersen of the Nebraska 4-H Foundations new website and marketing activities. Petersen said the website and related traditional and social media forums helped increase donations by making it easy to give online.

The Nebraska 4-H Foundation website is designed to serve as a hub of activity, with users being funneled to the site through elements of a strategic marketing and fundraising plan. The Nebraska 4-H Foundation already had basic digital marketing tools in place, but lacked the strategy to use them with any power, Petersen said. We mapped out a strategic path to get 4-H lovers involved.

Petersen said the key to the success of the project was taking time to understand the organization and their alumni. Using this information, a team of strategic partners worked together to create a custom solution. Our business model allows us to form a team specifically for each client, bringing in the best expertise to fit the specific needs of each project, Petersen said.

For the Nebraska 4-H Foundation project, for example, Turbine Interactive engaged the services of Clover Frederick of the Nonprofit Marketing Network to help identify and create effective tactics and messages. Frederick is an expert in using new media to increase interest in nonprofit organizations.

The custom marketing plan combines the best digital marketing technology available with traditional media to bring people to the website. We are using email marketing and social media to interact with 4-H members and alumni, Petersen explained, and were using traditional marketing tools, such as print newsletters and appeal letters, to continue communicating with donors and potential donors.

Stuart Shepard, executive director of the Nebraska 4-H Foundation, said working with Turbine Interactive was easy because Petersen and the strategic team members knew exactly how to approach the project efficiently and effectively. Shepard said he chose Turbine Interactive for the job because it was obvious they had the professional staff and expertise to meet the challenges of working with a large national, not-for-profit organization.

L’Academie de Cuisine, one of the United States “Top Ten” Culinary Schools, is pleased to announce that alumni Jake Lydon will teach Phase 1 of the Culinary Arts Evening Program beginning March 27, 2012. Jake is a 2001 graduate of L’Academie’s Culinary Arts program and has worked at several Washington, DC fine dining restaurants including Black Salt as Executive Sous Chef, 1789 Restaurant, and Addie’s. Jake will join Chef Frank Morales, Director of LAC’s evening programs. Jake is currently working alongside Chef Frank and the chefs on LAC’s culinary team and says that he is learning “how much there is to know and after 10 years of professional cooking, there is still so much more to learn. Watching Chef Brian teach a simple Quiche Lorraine and break it into components, each one as important as the other was a revelation. I have learned to slow down and focus on the student learning for the first time.” Chef Francois, Founder and Director of LAC is pleased to add another graduate to his teaching staff and said “Jake is an enthusiastic, smart cook who relates easily to the students at our school and will prove to be an excellent teacher.” Jake is also married to another LAC graduate whom he met while they were classmates.

Plus Technologies is pleased to announce that it has delivered a Tamper Resistant Prescription Printing solution to a large healthcare provider.

The Tamper Resistant Prescription Printing solution is based on Plus Technologies OM Plus Delivery Manager (DM) software. Plus Technologies has teamed with a major printer manufacturer to deliver this solution to a large healthcare provider serving the Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia markets.

The customer was looking for a cost effective way to meet the strict requirements defined in the 2007 CMS Tamper-Resistant Prescription Law. The law requires that printed prescriptions have a number of tamper-resistant security features in order to prevent fraudulent acts.

In addition, the customer was hoping to save costs by moving from expensive pre-printed forms to an electronic forms software solution that prints on plain paper. The customer uses McKesson EMR/EHR application products. The McKesson system is able to create the prescription document in pcl output format. The Plus Technologies solution takes the pcl data and strips out unnecessary McKesson data, merges the remaining prescription data with pantographic and microprint data, then delivers it to conventional laser printer. The software creates the prescription document so it can be printed on plain paper saving the costs related with using pre-printed forms which are expensive.

The Plus Technologies embedded pantographic information is laid into the background of printed prescriptions, so the words COPY or VOID appear when the prescription is copied. There are also anti-erasure and anti-print liftoff features to prevent modifications to the original prescription. In addition, a microfont border is applied to the documents for additional security.

Physical inactivity may be Americas largest public health nemesis, contributing to a myriad of chronic diseases including obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, depression and anxiety, arthritis, and osteoporosis. Since the average American walks less than half the amount of steps necessary to maintain health and prevent disease, a major challenge is getting office workers and students moving in an increasingly sedentary work environment. Researchers at Iowa State University have just released preliminary findings of a large scale study designed to test the merits of one potential solution: TrekDesk treadmill desks.

The research project is coordinated by a team at Iowa States Nutrition and Wellness Research Center (NWRC) led by Dr. Greg Welk, Director of Clinical Research and Community Outreach. The team launched a campus wide campaign to promote interest and involvement in physical activity and a key part of their programming involved re-engineering work/ study environments with the use of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks combined with LifeSpan Fitness treadmills provided by 2nd Wind.

We have TrekDesks in use at numerous universities across the country, stated TrekDesk CEO Steve Bordley, many are conducting studies on a variety of health and productivity issues, however the scale of the Iowa State study, when completed, will be larger than all of the other studies combined. I think that shows extraordinary leadership and commitment to their goal of educating America about its current health challenges and offering life changing information and solutions.

The TrekDesk study is part of Iowa States commitment to the national Exercise is Medicine campaign, an effort coordinated by the American College of Sports Medicine and other leading health and fitness organizations to educate the public and medical professionals about the need to view exercise as a vital sign.

The NWRC created a plan that enables the TrekDesks to be piloted in departments and office units across campus. Dr. Welk commented, Our staff have really enjoyed the opportunities to use the TrekDesks in our facility so we worked out a way to promote shared use across campus. Over 35 other office groups are in line to participate in the three phased testing process. “The interest has been incredible, Dr. Welk said. We have a waiting list through April of next year which indicates that people are really interested in ways of being more active at work.

Logging the use of the TrekDesks over specific time intervals, Dr. Welk and his team has focused the study on evaluating patterns and perceptions of use as well as overall satisfaction with the concept of walking while working. Their hope initially is to gain an insight into how to effectively introduce physical activity and at what intervals into the workplace for maximum health benefits.

The study has completed two waves and is currently in the third wave. The first two waves covered the following departments and offices: Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, College of Human Sciences Deans Office, Kinesiology, Presidents Office, Administrative Services, Sociology, College of Design and Chemistry.

Approximately 82% of survey respondents indicated that they would recommend the TrekDesk and 73% agreed that the university should consider getting TrekDesks for their employees. It should be noted that the TrekDesks were placed in common areas of the offices so that many individuals could have access during the day as opposed to specific offices.
