Social Media Workplace Expert Speaks in NYC at BrandsConf
Social Media Workplace Expert Speaks in NYC at BrandsConf
(PRWEB) November 09, 2011
Jessica Miller-Merrell shares her story when your personal brand outshines the corporate brand.
Social media is changing the face of the workplace at rapid speed and companies are struggling to keep up. Jessica Miller-Merrell, SPHR is an expert on the subject of social media in the workplace. With more than ten years as a corporate human resources professional and recruiter, Miller-Merrell first began using dating websites, chat rooms, and forums to recruit candidates from store managers to cashiers starting in 2001.
Miller-Merrell will be speaking at Digital Anthropologist’s, Jeff Pulver’s BrandsConf Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 in New York City, New York. Miller-Merrell’s topic is, “When Your Personal Brand Outshines the Corporate Brand” and discusses the ever-growing concern from companies worried about their employees after-work and social networking activities.
Miller-Merrell is no stranger to the topic. She began her blogging career in 2007 as a hobby turned into full-time business and career after her employer became increasingly concerned about her social networking and blogging activities. Her consulting company is founded on educating and training organizations and senior leaders on the business case for social media. She works with companies like AT&T, University of Oklahoma and Conoco Phillips.
“Companies are scared of social media. They can’t effectively control and spin the messages that their employees deliver, but what they can do is treat their employees well, listen, learn, and respond both in person and using social media,” says Miller-Merrell.
Miller-Merrell encourages companies to train their employees on how to use social networks providing them information and insights that the general public are not aware. “By training and educating your workforce on the use of social media, you can set the ground work. Employees are not receiving social media instruction and training at universities and colleges especially since the average age of a social media user is 37 years old.”
BrandsConf is in its second year and seeks to provide insights from brands like Citi, Time Warner Cable, and Coca-Cola exploring the “Humanization of Brands” and the underlying effects this is having on business. Sessions will be made available via livestream at http://www.ustream.tv/nyc140conf for those that are unable to attend.
Jessica Miller-Merrell, SPHR is known as @blogging4jobs. She’s an author, speaker, and social media workplace expert who spent over 10 years corporate human resources and recruiting roles. Jessica has a passion for recruiting, training, and all things social media. Her book, Tweet This! Twitter for Business, a how to business guide to Twitter was published in February 2010.

Earth Force and GM Recognize Teachers for Environmental Education
Earth Force and GM Recognize Teachers for Environmental Education
Richmond, VA (PRWEB) November 03, 2011
Earth Force and the General Motors Foundation announced five winners of the Chevrolet GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Education Network) Educator Award. It recognizes educators who integrate environmental education into their school or community curriculums.
“These teachers represent the best of our education system,” said Vivian Pickard, president of the GM Foundation. “By extending their environmental knowledge to tomorrow’s leaders and problem solvers, they help grow our nation’s culture of sustainability and good business practices that strive to reduce our impact on the environment. The winners are:
Robert Thomson of Ossineke, Mich. – Thomson’s classes, at Sanborn Elementary School, have worked with numerous partners to learn about the Thunder Bay watershed. The students have performed water quality testing, macro-invertebrate studies, learned about and experimented with zebra mussels, and created three Remote Operated Vehicles, or ROVs
Pamela Wallentiny of Columbia, Md. – Wallentiny has integrated sustainability themes into her developmental English class. Throughout the semester, students read books and articles about sophisticated topics related to sustainability, including environmental conservation, storm water management, integrated pest management, and green building practices. Students in her class engage in service learning experiences focused on sustainable agriculture in order to tie the content of reading material directly to real-life experiences.
Laura Lee Lienk of Monterey Bay, Cali. – Lienk is the co-director of the Watershed Institute at CSU Monterey Bay. Simultaneously, she is the Director of Return of the Natives Restoration Education Project (of the Watershed Institute) and the Coordinator of Service Learning in the Applied Science and Technology at CSUMB. Presently, Lienk is coordinating a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) academic learning community.
Nita Gonzalez of Denver, Colo. – Gonzales is the President of the Escuela Tlatelolco, an ECE-12th grade program. The program uses a cutting edge environmental education curriculum that incorporates environmental education and social change work. She partners with indigenous tribes throughout the state to teach Escuela students about their responsibility to the Earth and alternative perspectives on resource management.
Les Pace of Wagoner, Okla. – As the President of Pace Applied Technologies Inc., Pace has helped Tulsa and Oklahoma City Public Schools learn about energy audits and has helped save thousands of dollars with his expert guidance, careful facilitation of learning, and caring sustainable contact with students and educators who have crossed his path.
Earth Force will announce five additional winners in December. Recipients will be featured on http://www.greeneducator.org, along with their teaching tools and methods for getting students involved.
“These teachers have gone above and beyond the call of duty to inspire and support their students in taking action to improve their communities,” said Lisa Bardwell, president and CEO of Earth Force. “Each of them has done an exemplary job of incorporating environmental awareness and civic action into formal instruction.”
Supported by the GM Foundation, the Chevrolet GREEN Educator Award honors K-12 classroom teachers, higher education faculty and informal community-based instructors. Nominations can be made on the Chevrolet GREEN Educator Award website.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa to Add Third Hotel Tower
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa to Add Third Hotel Tower
Catoosa, Okla. (PRWEB) November 08, 2011
A third hotel tower will soon grace the horizon at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, positioning the resort as the largest gaming and entertainment destination in the region.
Cherokee Nation and Cherokee Nation Entertainment officials broke ground Tuesday on the construction of a third hotel tower that will add 100 suites and more than 55,000 square feet of entertainment and gaming space to the current resort. The construction will cost $ 52 million and is slated to be completed in 2012.
“Today the prosperity of our nation is all around us, as evidenced by the growth of Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, our largest gaming property,” said Bill John Baker, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “With that prosperity comes great responsibility to serve the Cherokee people. Projects such as this meet that goal in two ways, by creating jobs and funding vital services for our citizens.”
The resort has been wildly successful since the first hotel tower was built in 2004, boasting the finest rooms in the Tulsa Metro and a 90 percent occupancy rate.
“The addition of more hotel rooms and amenities will allow us to provide an even greater entertainment experience for our guests,” said David Stewart, chief executive officer, Cherokee Nation Entertainment. “We work very hard to provide our guests with an experience they can’t find anywhere else.”
The new tower will also pioneer the way for those seeking a non-smoking gaming and hospitality experience, with a smoke-free casino floor and hotel rooms. Additional entertainment options include a new media bar and an innovative gaming zone with interactive and multiplayer games.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa currently offers multiple dining options and nightspots, a theater-style event center, convention space, an art gallery, a jewelry store, a clothing store and a championship 18-hole course.
The property will employ nearly 1,500 people when the new tower and gaming floor open for business, an increase of nearly 20 times the number of employees since the property opened in 1993.
“Our growth in the past two decades has been incredible, and we’re extremely excited about the addition of a third tower,” Stewart said. “The addition of a second hotel tower in 2009 and The Joint in 2010 have propelled our growth and allowed us to provide entertainment and amenities available nowhere else in northeast Oklahoma.”
Cherokee Nation Entertainment is the gaming, entertainment, hospitality, retail and tourism entity of the Cherokee Nation. CNE operates Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa; seven Cherokee Casinos in Roland, Sallisaw, West Siloam Springs, Tahlequah, Fort Gibson, Claremore and Ramona; two Cherokee Outpost convenience stores; six retail tobacco shops; four gift shops; two golf courses; the Cherokee Travel Plaza; and four hotels. CNE employs more than 3,500 people in northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas.
