Ending Poverty As We Know It: Guaranteeing A Right To A Job

Across the United States tens of millions of people are working forty or more hours a week…and living in poverty. This is surprising in a country where politicians promise that anyone who does their share, and works hard, will get ahead. In “Ending Poverty As We Know It”, William Quigley argues that it is time to make good on that promise by adding to the Constitution language that insures those who want to work can do so and at a wage that enables them to afford reasonable shelter, clothing,

New Report: Americans Devote 8.1 Billion Hours to Volunteering in 2010

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 08, 2011

Volunteers provide a powerful economic and social benefit to communities across the nation, with 62.8 million adults serving almost 8.1 billion hours through organizations in 2010, according to research released today by the federal Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

The agencys annual Volunteering In America research finds that Americas volunteers provided services valued at nearly $ 173 billion to communities and the nation last year, using Independent Sectors estimate of the dollar value of volunteer time.

Notably, Generation X volunteers (born 1965-1981) devoted more time to service in 2010 than they ever have before, giving more than 2.3 billion hoursan increase of almost 110 million hours over 2009. Generation X members more than doubled their volunteer rate between 1989 and the present day, from 12.3 percent in 1989 to 29.2 percent in 2010. This rise demonstrates a shift that researchers are seeing across the volunteer lifecyclethe arc of civic involvement that tends to increase as citizens feel a deeper connection to their communities through personal networks, their workplace, and their childrens schools.

While the overall national volunteer rate dipped slightly from 26.8 percent in 2009 to 26.3 percent in 2010, the number of hours volunteers served remained approximately the same at 8.1 billion hours, indicating many volunteers committed more hours to service. The proportion of volunteers who serve 100 hours or more appears to have increased between 2009 and 2010 from 33.2 percent to 33.8 percent, and the median number of hours served per volunteer appears to have increased from 50 to 52 per year.

Every day, volunteers of all ages are giving their time and talents to solve problems and make our country stronger, said Robert Velasco II, acting CEO of CNCS. Whether tutoring at-risk students or providing job training to veterans or responding to natural disasters, ordinary Americans are doing extraordinary things to improve the long-term health and vitality of the nation.

CNCS produces the annual Volunteering In America research to provide elected officials and nonprofit leaders with in-depth information on volunteering trends and demographics to help them develop strategies to mobilize more Americans to address local needs through service. Offering the most comprehensive data on volunteering ever assembled, the report includes a volunteer profile for all states, including the District of Columbia, and hundreds of cities, including data on volunteer rates, rankings, area-specific trends, and analysis.

The research is part of the agencys efforts to expand the impact of Americas volunteers on key economic and social challenges facing the nation. CNCS provides critical support to Americas nonprofit and voluntary sector through grants, training, research, coordination, and partnerships with public agencies, nonprofits, and businesses. Last year, CNCS engaged more than five million Americans in results-driven service to help communities tackle local challenges.

Other findings about the volunteer lifecycle include:

BinMaster 3D MultiVision Software for Multiple Bin Monitoring

Lincoln, NE (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

BinMaster Level Controls announces the introduction of 3D MultiVision, a Windows-based inventory management software for the 3DLevelScanner that enables users to view data for multiple bins in a single window. 3D MultiVision software can be used with all versions of the non-contact, dust penetrating 3DLevelScanner including the S, M, MV and MVL models. By clicking on a single bin, users can zoom in on detailed information for the bin including minimum, maximum and average levels and see the 3D visualization of bin content for the MV and MVL models. The software allows multiple users at multiple locations to view bin level and volume data 24/7 via their Local Area Network (LAN).

3D MultiVision software makes real-time bin data available across the entire organization to improve purchasing, logistics, operational decision making and financial management. The software is compatible with Windows XP and Windows 7 and features user-friendly set up and intuitive operation. It allows each user to customize their screen to view all bins or a group of bins, and color-code bins by material type. Users can set high and low level alerts to be notified when bins reach critical levels. As the software is installed on the LAN, there are no third party applications or data access fees.

3DLevelScanner advancements in multiple-point measurement and 3D visualization take operations to a new level of inventory management. Todays busy customers demand a simple solution for monitoring multiple bins in real-time. MultiVision makes it easy to zero in on bins when they reach critical low or high levels, said Todd Peterson, vice president of sales for BinMaster. With MultiVision, each user custom configures what data they want to see whether its headroom, mass, volume, pounds, bushels, or a 3D image whatever best helps them do their job.

Pearsons MyLanguageLabs Translate to Student Achievement

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 07, 2011

Fifty-three percent of U.S. college students studying a foreign language are enrolled in Spanish classes, and with good reason: Its the second-most common language spoken in the U.S. after English. And as the economy continues to struggle, many students are looking to enhance their Spanish and other World Language skills in order to stand out in a competitive jobs market.

According to a new report, student performance in world languages is increasing and instructors are benefiting following use of an interactive online homework and tutorial program that is reshaping how World Languages are taught. The program, MyLanguageLabs from Pearson, is in use at 700 colleges across the US.

For example, Purdue University, which serves up to 1,300 students in its intermediate Spanish courses each term, redesigned its courses to create a uniform curriculum and consistent grading experience. Instructors report that students are now more engaged with their learning and, in just one academic year, the overwhelming majority of students now earn a grade of C or better, with Bs the grade most awarded during the time period studied.

Many institutions, like Metropolitan Community College in Nebraska, are using online programs to increase access to learning. Professor Dallas Jurisevic wanted a learning resource to make her online courses as effective and engaging for students as the traditional lecture-format courses.

Essentially, I wanted a better way to teach, says Professor Jurisevic. MySpanishLab has made both my online and on-campus teaching more effective. I can now spend more time on one-on-one instruction, intervening when students need individualized attention. [This] enables me to offer an online course that is fully robust and an effective alternative to the on-campus classes.

At Lehigh Carbon Community College in Pennsylvania, where 20 percent of the students in Professor Charles Molanos courses are returning adults, students final grades have increased by 17 percent following implementation of MySpanishLab, and the program gives students a learning advantage that lasts beyond the end of the term.

Students are just amazed at the instant feedback they receive they feel as though theyve been given a personal tutor. The tutorials are particularly effective at preparing students for active communication, says Professor Molano.

MyLanguageLabs can be customized to suit each students level of knowledge and used in any environmentlab-based, blended and distance learning or classroom. Instructors can easily create, import and manage online homework, quizzes and tests, all of which are automatically graded for instant feedback to studentsfreeing instructors to spend less time grading and more time working directly with their students.

This gives you time to spend on meaningful pedagogical activities like engaging and interacting with your students, adds Anne Prucha, an instructor at the University of Central Florida.

Institutions profiled in the report are: Columbia Southern University, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Metropolitan Community College, Metropolitan State College, Midway College, Purdue University, University of Central Florida and the University of Mississippi.

The report, MyLanguageLabs in Action: Proven Performance, is available at http://www.myspanishlab.com/assets/documents/Language_In_Action_Brochure.pdf. In addition to Spanish, the MyLabs are available French, Italian, Chinese and Latin.

Pearsons MyLab and Mastering programs have changed the way millions of students learn and have supported many successful faculty and programs in the redesign of college courses to effectively use technology to improve achievement and manage costs. Demand for the MyLab and Mastering programs soared to more than 8 million student registrations in 2010, with 232 million assignments submitted and more than 750,000 students logging in daily.

Target Employees Campaign to Save Thanksgiving Goes Viral

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 15, 2011

More than 75,000 people from every state have joined an explosive campaign on Change.org in the past day alone calling on popular retailer Target to reverse its decision to open late Thanksgiving night for pre-Black Friday shopping and instead allow workers to spend the holiday with family.

The surging campaign on Change.org was launched by Anthony Hardwick, a Target employee in Omaha, Nebraska, after he learned the companys management had moved the standard Black Friday opening time up from 5am on Friday to midnight on Thanksgiving. The new opening time will require employees to arrive at work no later than 11pm on Thanksgiving Day.

By launching a Change.org campaign, I know I’m taking a risk, said Hardwick, who currently works as a parking lot attendant for a Target store. But I’m not just doing this for myself and my own family. I’m speaking out for the thousands of other Target employees who are concerned about risking their job by publicly taking a stand against these earlier Thanksgiving Day hours.”

And its not just employees who are angry, Hardwick added. Customers have signed onto my campaign as well, and many are starting their own petitions. Clearly, the retail giants have gone too far.

Just days after Hardwick launched his Change.org campaign, 26 similar petitions were created on the Change.org platform. Target, Macys, Best Buy and Kohls all plan to open at midnight on Thanksgiving, and Walmart will go one step further with a 10 p.m. open time. Yesterday, it was announced that Toys R Us will be opening at 9pm on Thanksgiving Day.

This is a clear example of Change.orgs platform empowering people to take action on the issues they care about, said Jess Kutch, director of organizing at Change.org. A few years ago, employees like Anthony would have had no recourse except for registering their concern in a company suggestion box. Now, as evidenced by the rapid growth that Anthony has seen with his campaign in just a matter of days, anyone can start a movement.

Many major retailers like J.C. Penney have chosen to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, citing their employees right to a holiday.

We wanted to give our associates Thanksgiving Day to spend with their families,” said Bill Gentner, senior vice president for marketing at J.C. Penney, in an interview with the New York Times.
