Americans for Prosperity: Indiana Embraces Worker Freedom

Americans for Prosperity applauds Indianas state Senate for standing up for Hoosier workers and making Indiana the 23rd Right to Work state. The bill has already passed the Indiana House and now heads to Governor Mitch Daniels, who will sign it later today.

Economic studies have found that Right to Work states enjoy double the job growth of non-Right to Work states. In addition, census data shows that over 5 million Americans moved from non-Right to Work to Right to Work states between 2000 and 2009. All of the states surrounding Indiana are non-Right to Work states.
Indianas Right to Work law is a victory for workers everywhere, adds Tim Phillips, President of Americans for Prosperity. Indiana has done the right thing by giving workers the freedom to choose where they work, without having to first ask permission from a union.
When states give workers the right to choose, the result is more jobs and more prosperity. Surrounding states should be looking to Indiana as an example of how to support worker freedom, Phillips concluded.
Right to Work legislation prevents unions from denying workers a job based on union membership or requiring workers to pay union dues. It does not prevent collective bargaining or legal union organizing.
Hoosiers should be proud of Governor Daniels and our state legislators, particularly primary sponsors Representative Jerry Torr and Senator Carlin Yoder, and House Speaker Brian Bosma and Senate President Pro Tem David Long, for their leadership in making Right to Work a priority, added Downham.
HB1001, Employees Right to Work, passed the Indiana House Wednesday, January 25.
