Petition to The Whitehouse Regarding ‘Student Loan’ Abuses by Higher Ed

Petition to The Whitehouse Regarding ‘Student Loan’ Abuses by Higher Ed

(PRWEB) November 28, 2011

On September 22, 2011, The Whitehouse launched the “We the People” online petition process on WhiteHouse.gov– a new platform to give Americans a way to create and sign petitions on a range of issues affecting our nation. If a petition gathers enough online signatures, it will be reviewed by policy experts and an official response will be issued by The Whitehouse.

Official website: https://wwws.Whitehouse.gov/petitions

The Register, a conservative online newspaper, became aware of America’s Higher Education crisis and investigated. Led by editor-in-chief, Gordon W. Watts, a non-lawyer, whose main claim to fame is his court case which almost won on behalf of Terri Schiavo, The Register initiated the petition process to seek a multi-pronged solution to the various problems:

UP: Skyrocketing college tuition up –at rate far above consumer price index
DOWN: Quality of American higher education down –below other nations
UP: Dramatic rise in student loan defaults
DOWN: Crippled economy due to unbearably high debt burden on students
UP: Resulting spike in suicides directly attributable stress from debt stress among students
NEW: ‘Student Loan’ debt surpassing ‘Credit Card’ debt for the first time in America’s history

The petition, created last week, seeking fair treatment for college students, is posted to the Whitehouse’s website at: http://wh.gov/jU8

Under Whitehouse rules, the petition will become searchable on the Whitehouse website if it reaches 150 signatures, which will make the goal of the second ‘threshold’ much easier due to public visibility on The Whitehouse website. A second, but lesser-known “benefit” of reaching the 150-signature threshold, is the ‘immortality’ status, in which the petition will become permanently archived in The Whitehouse website, and still eligible to receive signatures, even after the ‘expiration’ period for an official Whitehouse response.

The Register discovered this little-known fact about The Whitehouse petition process when it observed the ‘expired’ petition https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/promote-enforce-teaching-evolution-over-creationism/H4HkDs0B created Sept 24, 2011, well over a month ago, but still present at The Whitehouse website and eligible to receive signatures. By contrast, another petition ( http://wh.gov/24m ) was deleted after its expiration period, since it did not reach the ’150-signature’ threshold. Therefore, The Register is issuing an official statement of a short-term goal of reaching 150 signatures on http://wh.gov/jU8

Conservatives supporting this petition view the unbearably high tuition as legally a tax, as it flows to the government, State Universities in most cases.

Liberals are supporting this petition are concerned about the fact that student borrowers do not have ‘Standard Consumer Protections,’ which even credit card users have.

Economic experts of all political stripes have noted the easy availability of huge ‘student loans’ allows students to borrow more, thus enticing colleges to charge more, driving tuition prices through the roof.

For further information, see recent coverage of this issue at the official mirrors of The Register:

The Register’s official statement asks that all interested parties sign the petition and forward it to college students who are seeking fair treatment and reform of the current level of abuses.

Sources documenting alarming rise in suicide directly related solely to Student Loan defaults:

[*] “Crushing debt” (Chicago Sun-Times, BY DAVE NEWBART) September 24, 2007 “Jan Yoder was preparing for her son’s funeral when the phone rang. It was another student loan collector wanting to know when her son would pay up…It was those calls and the burden of crushing debt, she says, that led her depressed son to take the drastic action of killing himself late last month. ”When it gets to the point where people are fleeing the country, going off the grid or taking their own lives, you know something has gone horribly wrong,” said Alan Collinge, founder of Student Loan Justice (StudentLoanJustice.org), which is pushing to change student lending laws.” (Higher Ed NewsWeekly: from the Illinois Board of Higher Education, page 57) ~ (Newsalert)

[*] “I’m Thinking of Suicide Because of My Student Loans. – John” (GetOutOfDebt.org, undated news story) “Dear Steve, My student loans are almost $ 42,000 dollars. I pay almost $ 260 dollars per month and all but $ 12 dollars is interest and the principal continues to go higher…I frequently think about suicide; thinking about my son is the only thing that has so far kept me from committing suicide. John” [* "A Pastor's Student Loan Debt" (NPR, by Libby Lewis) July 14, 2007 “Dan Lozer's tiny paycheck means he'll be paying off those loans until 2029...Lozer said there was a time when he thought about suicide.”

For a religious view on finance & debt, accepted by many pastors, such as Lozer, see note "36" in Watts' position paper, regarding various Bible standards on interest fee charges and loan forgiveness options.

[*] “Company’s march toward student loan monopoly scary” (The News Tribune, By ALAN COLLINGE) 06/19/07 “In Boston; a medical student can’t get licensed because he can’t pay $ 52,000 on what began as a $ 3,000 debt. A suicide in Oregon. A suicide in Maryland. People who have fled the country due to the explosion of their student loan debt. The list goes on and on.”

The preceding press release was written by Gordon Wayne Watts of Lakeland, Florida, who received a Bachelor’s degree from The Florida State University with a double major in Biological and Chemical Sciences with honors and was the valedictorian from United Electronics Institute. Watts, a non-lawyer, is best known for his lawsuit on behalf of Terri Schiavo[1], which lost 4-3 in the Florida Supreme Court, arguably doing better than even then Governor Jeb Bush’s similar suit[2] (lost: 7-0) or Terri Schiavo’s own family’s federal case[3] (lost: 2-1). Mr. Watts, who ran unsuccessfully for Dist. 64 Fla. House of Representatives, is a part-time political activist while he searches for a full-time job in his field.

A Bad Attitude Can Mean Better Credit Scores According To GetCreditRepair.org

A Bad Attitude Can Mean Better Credit Scores According To GetCreditRepair.org

United Debt Counseling 1-800-665-9981

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) November 24, 2011

According to GETCREDITREPAIR.ORG, researchers at Louisiana State University (LSU), Texas Tech University and Northern Illinois University found that people with bad attitudes tend to have higher credit scores, confirming a link between the numerical index used to obtain credit and consumers’ personalities.

The Study compared participants’ responses to surveys regarding their personalities with their FICO scores, the most commonly used scores in the United States. What they found was that there was a negative relationship between agreeableness and credit scores, or in other words the more agreeable you are, the lower your credit score is. LSU professor Jeremy Bernerth, one of the study’s authors said, “Alternatively, the more disagreeable you are, the higher your credit score is.”

Judith Lisbin, whose website http://www.getcreditrepair.org offers credit restoration services speculates that the reason for this is that, “People with disagreeable personalities are less likely to yield to family or peer pressure to co-sign a loan, or to open a store credit card when they are approached in a store.”

Bernerth said, “We do know that agreeableness is also negatively related to career advancement and career earnings. It doesn’t seem like too far of a stretch to link those findings with one’s credit score.” Lisbin added, “Employers often consider credit score and history when hiring candidates and equate creditworthiness with success or career performance.” Furthermore, the researchers acknowledge that there may be a correlation between credit scores and job performance in that they find both successful career performance and high credit scores require conscientious behavior.

However, contrary to what many employers believe, the researchers found that there was no correlation between low credit scores and bad behavior on the job. Bernerth said, “It was telling that poor credit scores were not correlated to theft and other deviant types of work behaviors. Most companies attempt to justify the use of credit scores because they think such employees will end up stealing, but our research suggests that might not be the case.”

WWW.GETCREDITREPAIR.ORG has helped thousands of consumers across the nation repair their credit reports with their credit repair program. For more information about their programs, contact 800-665-9981. They can also be found on the web at http://www.getcreditrepair.org.

Pinnacle Insurance Group Explains How Local Companies Can Keep Their Workers Healthy This Winter with Safety Tips and Illinois Business Insurance

Pinnacle Insurance Group Explains How Local Companies Can Keep Their Workers Healthy This Winter with Safety Tips and Illinois Business Insurance

Hobart, IN (PRWEB) November 13, 2011

The team at local Pinnacle Insurance Group knows that many companies are entering busy season during this time of year. Whether businesses are trying to put up big numbers during the fourth quarter or shipping large loads of products in and out of the warehouse, one thing is for sure; they need to have proper Illinois business insurance to keep them financially protected from any unexpected mishaps. With all the hustle and bustle, it’s no wonder that worker injuries are very common during this time of year.

The experts at Pinnacle Insurance Group want to help their commercial lines clients maintain a healthy, productive workplace this winter, no matter what the season weather brings. Here are some tips on how to do so:

Business owners should ensure that their company has adequate workers compensation coverage under their Illinois business insurance policy. This will help pay for employees’ lost wages and medical costs if they are injured while on the job.
One of the most common reasons for employee absences is the common cold. Take the initiative this winter and provide anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitizer for workers to use regularly throughout the day.
Teach all employees how to lift heavy objects safely without putting excess strain on their back.
Ensure that workstations are ergonomically suitable so that desk-based employees do not miss work due to back problems or carpal tunnel syndrome stemming from uncomfortable working conditions.

Having the busy season in full swing means that business owners will need their employees working to full capacity. One way to ensure that everything goes smoothly is to ensure that the company has comprehensive business coverage from a reputable Illinois or Indiana insurance company like Pinnacle Insurance Group. After all, the insurance experts at Pinnacle Insurance Group know that even a relatively small incident could lead to serious financial strain for small businesses.

About Pinnacle Insurance Group:

Established in 1942, Pinnacle Insurance Group is a full service, independent Indiana insurance company, proudly providing unparalleled customer experience along with free saving analysis services. Premium Tobacco Association Calls Proposed Cook County and Chicago Taxes ?Job-Killers?

Premium Tobacco Association Calls Proposed Cook County and Chicago Taxes ‘Job-Killers’

Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) November 14, 2011

The International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association is objecting to new tobacco tax proposals by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and two alderman in the City of Chicago by calling them ‘jobs-killing and business-busting.’

Preckwinkle has proposed a county tax on other tobacco products (OTP) which includes all tobacco products other than pre-packaged cigarettes which have been taxed by the county at the rate of $ 2 per pack since 2006. That would be in addition to the state’s 18 percent OTP excise tax and other state and federal taxes. The Aldermen Matthew O’Shea and Leslie Hairston are considering similar increases for the city of Chicago.

The proposed new County tax include $ 1.20 per ounce for pipe and cigarette tobacco as well as $ .60 per ounce for smoking and smokeless tobacco, $ .30 per large cigar and $ .05 per little cigar. A committee of the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the increased tobacco taxes yesterday along with a 50 percent hike in county alcohol taxes. A final vote is expected yet this week.

“This is wrong on so many levels,” said Bill Spann, chief executive officer of the IPCPR. “First of all, Cook County and Chicago residents and consumers are already paying high taxes on all tobacco products. If the County Board or City Council increase those taxes, consumers will take their business elsewhere. In addition, bootlegging of tobacco products will be encouraged, as will their purchase over the Internet, neither of which generates taxes for any federal, state or local entity.”

Currently, the county is facing a projected budget shortfall of $ 315 million and the city of Chicago is bracing for significant budget cuts.

“That means not only would Chicago and Cook County not gain as much in additional tax revenues it may be projecting, but whatever tax revenues they are currently receiving will be reduced as consumers go elsewhere to make those and other purchases,” he said.

Spann took the analysis further.

“When consumers take their business elsewhere, jobs are lost and businesses are hurt. Many of those businesses will be forced to close,” he explained. “That’s not in the best interests of Cook County residents – whether or not they use tobacco products. Everyone would be affected negatively by jobs-killing and business-busting taxes like these.”
