Hawaii and Maryland Emerge as Top Regions for Student Growth

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), widely known as the nations report card, has released its most recent round of test scores, and the results, while highlighting advances in math proficiency, indicate a virtual halt in reading gains. The outcomes reveal national reading scores that have risen only a handful of points since 1990, with no progress made at all in the last few years among 4th graders. “This is wake up call to everyone with a stake in education,” says Curtis Linton, vice president of PD developer School Improvement Network. “For all of the progress we’ve made, we still have plenty of work to do.”
The highlight of the report, however, can be found in the figures emerging from a handful of states whose progress significantly outpaces the rest of the country. Chief among these are Maryland and Hawaii, the only states to make gains since 2009 in both reading and math at 4th and 8th grade levels.
Hawaii in particular has achieved unprecedented growth in proficiency rates in very little time. The progress owes itself, among other things, to the states improved infrastructure, renewed emphasis on leadership, and a statewide overhaul of professional development.
In January of 2010, the state of Hawaii installed the School Improvement Networks PD 360 professional development platform into all of its 289 public schools. Since that time, the state has not only realized gains in reading, but dramatic gains relative to the rest of the country. And while Maryland doesnt enjoy quite as wide a use of PD 360 as Hawaii, the majority of the districts in the state do currently utilize the platform for their professional development needs.
