Three Keys Consulting Group will manage the company’s day-to-day operations. Heasley himself will remain with the company as the Chairman of the Board.
“Some time ago, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma,” Heasley said. “Since then, while preparing the company for my eventual departure, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about the disease and working to support others suffering from it. This transition will not only bring new minds and fresh ideas to MedZilla, but it will also allow me to continue these efforts.”
Since founding MedZilla in 1994, Heasley set the job board apart from others by providing anonymized candidate abstracts, allowing employers and recruiters to peruse listings before actually signing up; developing a proprietary document matching system, which suggests the best candidates for any given position; and working to maintain candidate confidentiality by constantly updating information security measures. MedZilla itself was the first niche job board on the internet, and it remains one of the two longest-running job boards online.
Heasley’s successor, John Burkhardt, has been with MedZilla since 2003, and has worked closely with him throughout his eight-year tenure. After spending three years as Director of Operations, Burkhardt, a graduate of the University of Florida’s Warrington School of Business and an accomplished Information Systems Architect, was promoted to Managing Director.
“For the past several months, we’ve been transferring more of the daily management tasks to John,” Heasley said, “and I feel that, as I step down, I’m leaving MedZilla in excellent hands.”
“Frank and I have laid out the roadmap for new and exciting developments for the company,” Burkhardt said, “and I’m looking forward to ushering in the next phase of MedZilla.com, which includes new product offerings and pricing structures.”
Del Johnston, one of Three Keys’ consultants, will lead MedZilla’s management of client relations. Johnston, a former small-business owner, has been with MedZilla since 2010. The existing financial and administrative teams remain in place as well.
Dr. Heasley received his undergraduate degree from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, and his Master’s and Doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley. Before creating MedZilla, Heasley spent more than two decades working for leading medical products corporations, from lab bench to management, and also was the founder and president of two successful executive search organizations. He and his wife live in the greater Seattle area, and in addition to their work supporting sufferers of multiple myeloma, plan to continue exploring both the United States and the lands beyond.

It’s a buyers’ market in Florida housing. That’s a fact that no one denies. Sales are slow. Prices are stagnant. The projections, if you believe people like Wayne Archer of the University of Florida’s Bergstrom Center for Real Estate Studies, are gloomy. The question, of course, is “Gloomy for whom?”
The fact is that when you step back from the housing sales figures and take a look at the big picture, what you see is far different. A healthy and growing job market, recent drops in mortgage interest rates and property tax reform combine to make Florida an excellent place to buy a home – note that word. HOME, not a house, not an investment property, not a speculative deal, but a HOME.
Florida’s real estate boom of the last five to ten years has been driven in large part by two things – land speculation and sub-prime lending. Anyone can tell you that those are a shaky foundation for long-term growth. The recent slowdown in the real estate market is, likewise, due to the breakdown of those two factors – and it should come as no big surprise.
What Happened to the Bubble?
Real estate prices were driven higher and higher by investors who bought into the dream of flipping new construction and making a quick buck. They bought pre-construction and early construction properties with the intent of selling them at high profit when they were finished. According to some real estate analysts, close to 70% of real estate sales during the “boom years” were to investors.
At the same time, home buyers were seduced by the “creative financing” offered by many lenders. Promised fast gains in real estate value, many home buyers jumped at mortgage deals that were affordable in the short term. The first of those adjustable rate mortgages have hit the wall as they come up for interest adjustment, and those buyers who are unable to refinance are suddenly faced with mortgages that they can’t afford.
During the boom years, the real estate market favored investors. With prices rising as fast as you could record them, it made sense to buy with the intent to sell. Now that housing prices have stabilized and are even starting to drop slightly in some markets, the investment attraction has dropped. Those investors who bought with an eye to high profits from resales are ready to sell before prices drop. At the same time, many home buyers are faced with the prospect of a quick sale or foreclosure. The two market streams – investors unloading their properties to preserve as much profit as possible and homeowners who need to sell or lose their investment entirely – are creating a glut on the market.
Fewer investors and more houses on the market add up to a slow market. Buyers have been holding back, understandably. High property taxes and high interest rates had persuaded many buyers to wait for a better time to buy. For those home buyers who wanted to buy now, there is plenty of choice, and no urgency to close on a house before another buyer snaps up their dream home. In a soft market, a buyer who is in no hurry can afford to wait out a home seller in the hope that the price will drop, or try to negotiate better terms.
Florida is More than the Sum of Its Real Estate Market
Before we start mourning the death of the Florida real estate market, though, let’s take a look at the bigger picture. Overall, Florida’s economy is flourishing. The Florida unemployment rate continues at more than 1.3% below the national unemployment rate. Major companies – both national and international – are moving their headquarters and opening new offices in Florida cities, and account for nearly 150,000 new jobs in Florida since January 2006. In fact, the February issue of Forbes named six Florida cities in their top 25 “Best Cities for Jobs”.
Florida’s A+ Plan for Education is being touted as a model program for school improvement. Every school in the state is given a letter grade, so that it’s easy for parents to decide on options for their children’s education. The school choice program allows parents to move their children out of schools with bad grades, or provides incentives for them to work with those schools to improve them. Schools with poor grades are eligible for financial and technical aid to help them improve. Schools with good grades are eligible for monetary incentives as reward for doing well. In short, Florida has made providing excellence in education a priority.
Property taxes, which have been a major negative for many prospective buyers, are in the process of undergoing reform. Florida Governor Crist has committed not only to immediate tax cuts and savings, but to long term overhaul of the state’s property tax structure to make it more fair and equitable. In the meantime, there are several initiatives and methods to cut property taxes on the table.
Finally, for the first time in years, interest rates on Florida mortgages dropped for three consecutive weeks early this summer, and all indicators are that this trend will continue. Lower interest rates and lower home prices, combined with good schools, lower taxes and a strong economy – you can add up the numbers yourself.
Bad News for Speculators is Good News for Home Buyers
The doom and gloom sayers concentrate on falling home prices and the effect that those prices will have on investment value of housing. The fact is that most people are not buying real estate for speculation. Most people who buy houses are buying homes, not property. They are buying with the intent of settling in, raising a family, living in a community and creating a home.
Now is a perfect time for doing that in the Florida market. Today’s Florida home buyer will find a wealth of choices on the market, prices that reflect the value of their home, an excellent school system with a commitment to improving, a government that is committed to lowering property taxes while maintaining services and an economy that is attracting the biggest players in the world’s business market. Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of New Era for The Frank Berry Courts Housing Community in Meridian, MS

Wearing hard hats and armed with shovels, city and state officials broke ground on Frank Berry Courts during a ceremony held Oct. 19 to mark the start of an historic revitalization effort being under taken by the Meridian Housing Authority (MHA) that will bring new affordable housing to the city as well as good construction jobs to the local economy.
“We are so proud to be able to start this rehabilitation program that will assure the preservation of Frank Berry Courts as decent, attractive, and affordable housing for many decades into the future,” said Ronald J. Turner Sr., MHA’s executive director.
The MHA, with support from both the city and the county, was successful in securing a Capital Fund Recovery Competitive Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to fund a complete rehabilitation of Frank Berry Courts, which was originally constructed in 1939. The community, which provides housing for more than 100 families, had become outdated and distressed over the years, with many of its major systems obsolete.
The .5 million grant funded through the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act enabled the Housing Authority and its development partner, The Michaels Development Company, to move forward with the planned million rehabilitation program. Additional funding will come from the sale of tax-exempt bonds and low income housing tax credits.
“The stimulus funds will not only provide much needed housing for our families with low incomes, but will also create many good construction jobs for our community as we embark on this important community development,” Turner said.
Among the many improvements planned for Frank Berry Courts are central heat and air, new energy efficient windows, entry doors, roofs and vinyl siding. Interior improvements include new baths and kitchens with energy star appliances. All units will be painted and all floors will be tiled or carpeted, as appropriate. Improvements to the common areas, in scale and scope, are similar to those planned for the residential buildings.
“Years and years ago, it was called ‘public housing’ or ‘projects.’ This is as far from a ‘project’ as you can get,” said Mayor Cheri Barry. “We are bringing a better quality of life to the residents of Mississippi.”
Michaels Development Company, the nation’s leading affordable housing developer, has worked with public housing authorities throughout the country on similar developments. Its sister company, Interstate Realty Management, will provide property management as well social services to Frank Berry Courts when the rehabilitation program is complete.
“We are rebuilding to strengthen our community and empower our residents,” Turner said. “This is truly an historic occasion.”
In addition to the Mayor, dignitaries attending the groundbreaking ceremony included Councilman Jesse Palmer; Lauderdale County Supervisors Joe Norwood and Craig Hitt; MHA Board Chairman and State Rep. Wilbert Jones, Holly Knight, Public Housing Director and Mary Merchant, Acting Field Director of HUD’s Field Office in Jackson, MS. Wade Jones offered remarks on behalf of the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation, and Frank Berry residents Tina Dozier and Joann Bell provided a resident perspective.
Students from Carver Elementary School and Meridian High School also participated by providing the Presentation of Colors and leading the crowd of about 80 people in the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was sung by MHA Executive Director Ronald Turner.

Ron Zook, Spurrier’s replacement, was not beloved by any stretch in Gainesville, and he was basically run out of town after the 2004 season.
Zook is now struggling with a very bad Illinois team, and the job of restoring Gator glory fell on Urban Meyer, who was the “hot” coaching candidate after the 2004 season when he led Utah to unprecedented results and rankings. No one thought that Meyer would wind up in Florida, as most had him penciled in for the Notre Dame job, but in a very surprising turn of events, Meyer took the Florida job and declined Notre Dame’s overtures. The results are already beginning to show, and Florida Gators football tickets could once again become nearly impossible to find, as Meyer is building a foundation at Florida that could wind up rivaling Spurrier’s work. Below are a few reasons why this is the case.
Meyer’s System
Let’s face it – big-time college coaches are all more than competent when it comes to preparing a team for a game. There’s a reason they rose through the ranks and got to where they are. So what sets the truly great one apart? When it comes to in-game coaching, it’s the system that they have in place. Meyer’s spread offense is famous for its creativity and the difficulty it presents opponents in defending it. No one has really figured out how to stop it, and now that Meyer is in his second year, his system is beginning to take hold.
This spread offense has made several average-to-decent quarterbacks great ones, and one only need look at the current exploits of Chris Leak and Tim Tebow as well as how things worked out for Alex Smith at Utah to see just how effective this system can be. It’s possible that none of these quarterbacks would be NFL prospects without Meyer’s coaching, but Smith wound up being the first overall pick in the draft and Leak is headed to the NFL next season. Tebow, with the benefit of having four years under Meyer, has a ceiling that can’t even be defined at this point. Great offensive coaching leads to great quarterback play, and in college football, that alone can be enough to run a team through its schedule with a lot of wins.
Recruiting
Under Zook, the Gators were starting to lose a few of the recruiting battles that they had grown accustomed to winning under Spurrier, but Meyer has changed all of that. Meyer’s reputation is such that players want to go play for him, which does not bode well for Miami and Florida State, Florida’s traditional recruiting rivals. One can already see a few cracks in Miami’s and Florida State’s talent levels, and don’t think for a second that Meyer doesn’t have anything to do with that.
Great recruiting builds a great talent base, and even though Florida had what many considered to be the most brutal schedule in the country this season, the Gators are flying high and have a shot to qualify for the national championship game if they run the table through the rest of their SEC schedule.
All in all, a coaching system and a reputation lead to a recruiting advantage, and this recruiting advantage leads to a loaded roster, which Florida has already under Meyer. All of this can come together and lead to a run of national dominance, which is the direction in which Florida appears to be headed.
